Be small enough...

This song was one that my friend shared with me when they were trying to get pregnant. It is indeed a mystery that our great God can be small enough to hear us, to know us, to be close to us... to make it possible for life to begin, to make it possible for new lungs, to make it possible for each of us to keep breathing each day... Giving thanks with you all today!

Oh, great God
Be small enough to hear me now

There were times when I was crying
From the dark of Daniel's den
And I had asked you once or twice
If you would part the sea again

Tonight I do not need a
Fiery pillar in the sky
Just want to know you're gonna
Hold me if I start to cry

Oh, great God
Be small enough to hear me now
Oh, great God
Be close enough to feel me now
(Oh great God be close to me)

There have been moments when I could not face
Goliath on my own
And how could I forget we marched
Around our share of Jericho's

But I will not be setting out
The fleece for you tonight
Just wanna know if everything will be alright
Oh, great God be close enough to feel me now

Oh, praise and all the honor be
To the God of ancient mysteries
Whose every sign and wonder
Turn the pages of our history

But tonight my heart is heavy
And I cannot keep from whispering, whispering
Are you there?

And I know you could leave writing
On the wall that's just for me
Or send wisdom while I'm sleeping
Like in Solomon's sweet dreams

I don't need the strength of Sampson
Or a chariot in the end
Just wanna know you still know how many
Hairs are on my head

Oh, great God
(Are you small enough)
Be small enough to hear
Me now

New...

When I went on a church retreat back in February this year, we did this exercise of prayer and I thought about this when I woke up this morning and was praying for you.

IMAGINATIVE PRAYER – JEREMIAH 18

Today we are going to put ourselves into the shoes of the Jeremiah when God told him to go down to the potter's house. You don’t have to imagine that you’re Jeremiah, rather see it as an invitation from Jesus to go with him down to the potter's house.  We are going to imagine that Jesus is physically beside us as we make that trip.
It’s important that as you hear the story you try to feel what it’s like to actually be inside that story.  Listen, taste, smell, feel, and watch what happens. What can you see around you? What are Jesus’ facial expressions? What are you feeling?
I’ll read the story through once from the Bible first, and then we will enter the story more personally.
Listen as I read the story through from Jeremiah 18:
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. 5 Then the word of the LORD came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.
I invite you to put aside anything which you are carrying – just put it to on the ground or beside you so you hands are free. You may like to close your eyes so you are not distracted; take a few easy breaths and begin to relax.
Let us begin with a prayer:  Loving God who created us with imaginations, we offer this time to you and pray that the Holy Spirit will be present to guide and protect us and help us to draw closer to You. AMEN
We’re going to start by remembering a time when we felt close to Jesus, when we felt safe in his care. Ask Jesus to remind you of a time, and then stay with that awareness of Jesus close to you.
Now imagine that you’re sitting at home or some place where you feel at peace and safe. It’s the middle of the morning…think about what you might be doing, what activity is engaging you…
You hear a knock on the door, and as you open it there’s Jesus, your friend. He doesn’t come inside, but rather says, “Come down to the potter’s house, there’s something I want to show you.” Walk with Jesus down to the potter’s house. Take some time to imagine your surroundings…what sort of street are you walking down…what can you see as you look around you…what does it feel like to be with your friend Jesus…do you feel excitement?…anticipation?…anxiety?…take some time to notice how you are feeling
After a few minutes you reach the potter’s house. The potter is at the wheel and you stand watching her work. She’s shaping a pot…it’s taking shape but it’s not quite right…as you watch the potter takes the pot and starts to re-shape it…she’s skillful and as she gently works the pot with her hands another pot takes shape…spend some time just watching as the potter works
Jesus speaks softly to you. “Can I not do with you as this potter does?”…”Like clay in the hand of the potter so are you in my hand.”…Again he says softly, gently, compassionately, ”Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand.”…What do you think and feel as you hear those words spoken to you?…Spend some time talking with God about this, ask him what he would like to show you today…
Loving God, thank you that you care enough about us to hold us in your hands and to mold and shape us. Make us into the beautiful vessels that you intend us to be. Amen.  http://openingtogod.wordpress.com/2012/10/12/imaginative-prayer-jeremiah-18/
The words that came to mind this morning along with this imagery of the potter and the clay were the words, "new man."   Last night, when I saw that video of you, Jens, walking up the stairs, I saw a new man. I have not seen you with that ability to run up stairs since I met you. The time you came to stay with us in Knoxville was the time when you and Abby had to bring so much medical equipment with you for your breathing treatments.  What a contrast to last night's video.  The look on your face, the words, "YES!" in victory that you had bounded up those steps- what a sweet homecoming!!
You've both been on the potter's wheel in this story.  The Potter has reset the clay and melted it down to recreate something new.  Left on its own, the clay can fold in on itself. We do fold in on ourselves when we aren't open to God's grace and His touch.  But you both have been so open to the work of His hands in your lives.  I am rejoicing with you that God has made you into a new man, Jens.  And, Abby- through this, you have been made into a new woman too- love has shaped you as you have added to the beauty of this story through your incredible support, dedication and commitment.
Giving thanks for this new day, for His new mercies that are new every morning, for new lungs, for new possibilities that await you both, for new joys to celebrate.
We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8
The one sitting on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new!"  Revelation 21:5

HAPPY DANCE!!

After praying for you all today for health and protection,
I checked Facebook and got this notification.
Talk about IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION!!!

giving thanks....
(and see below for our family's response to this amazing news....)

Here is our happy dance for you!!!!

Emergen-C

This weekend, Taylor came home from school with some sniffles and then Jason seemed to follow Taylor's lead in feeling a bit under the weather. I tried to steer clear, but it seems that I've caught the bug too.  I woke up this morning with a bit of a scratchy throat, a stuffy nose and just a general feeling of being wiped out.  Not quite the best timing... My thought was along the lines of "I can't afford to get sick right now- not after the last 16 weeks of training..." And then, I thought about you all in the hospital doing everything you can to stay healthy and to get Jens home.  Same scenario. With your new lungs, you can't afford to get sick right now and to lose ground.

Just know that my sniffles have been one more reminder to be praying for protection for you, Jens.
Praying for fresh strength for you, for you to be able to soar like an eagle and for you to run and not get tired!!!  It's within reach- keep on going, Jens and Abby!

"But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, They run and don't get tired, they walk and don't lag behind." Isaiah 40:31

My lighthouse...

Just wanted to pass on this song to you all today as it might just put a spring in your step...
(and maybe even for your steps out of the hospital--
even if it is not today- I know it will be soon!)

My Lighthouse
by Rend Collective

In my wrestling and in my doubts
In my failures You won't walk out
You're great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

In the silence You won't let go
In the questions Your truth will hold
Your great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
Shining in the darkness I will follow You

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
I will trust the promise
You will carry me safe to shore
Safe to shore

I won't fear what tomorrow brings
With each morning I'll rise and sing
My God's love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

Fire before us You're the brightest
You will lead us through the storms

another post just for fun...

Have you all seen KidSnippets? We love them and thought this would make you laugh in case you have not seen it.

Here's one that we thought you would appreciate since it's a medical one (and since you sure know all about being in a hospital and seeing doctors and nurses.)

6-15-14

Last night, as I was going to bed, I checked Facebook to see if there were any updates on Lungs4Jens and found this:

I felt like a kid on the night before Christmas upon reading this.
You walked a whole mile, Jens?!!?
WHOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Seriously, this is cause for staying up all night and partying.
But I had a little self-control and was able to fall asleep last night after a bit of pinching myself.

After a good night of sleep, I woke up this morning to find this email message I get weekly on Sundays with a mediation about a piece of art:

ArtWay Visual Meditation June 15, 2014

Interlaced with Light

by Anikó Ouweneel-Tóth

Imre Szakács is, in his own words, a ‘visual writer’. He is one of the most important artists in Hungary today making religious artworks. His visual language is very recognizable. He is known for his dramatic paintings with mysterious symbolism and surrealistic traits.

I have known him since I was a child and the last time I visited Hungary I went to see Imre and his wife once again. They live in a self-designed and largely self-built house in the artists’ town of Szentendre, close to Budapest. The house reflects who they are: warm and inviting, strong and authentic, humble and genuine.

One of Imre Szakács’ paintings, Mustard Seed from 2009, inspired Anna Jókai, the grand lady of Hungarian literature, to write her story Togetherness. In her book she deals with what gives meaning to life, solidarity and comfort, inspired by this painting. This made me curious about the work, hence I went to see the work at the house of its owner. It turned out she was about to create a special space for this painting in her new house! We walked to her living room and there it was… Mustard Seed.

What happens when you are confronted with a painting that is so loaded with meaning? It makes you stop in your tracks and look carefully. The image takes hold of you, makes the world stand still. And then music starts to play in your soul, while the strings of your own story are being touched. The artist’s experience of life, imaginative force and skill come to life, divine inspiration does its work and awakens what lies hidden deep within you. Your deepest longings for the fullness of life are aroused by a hopeful promise breaking through into an often painful reality. In the image unfulfilled longings are released and fulfilled.

That’s how I stand before this painting, a light and elegant creation, painted with great technical skill. I look through a window of stone-like cool colours. Behind it I sense a warm light, which glistens here and there through the seemingly hard window frame. I see young slender branches waving back and forth. Mustard Seed, I remind myself. A wave of inspiration washes over me.

A kind of whirlwind, windpipe or pillar of fire descends in the centre of the canvas. It breaks the static window open. Life radiates from it. Light is breathed out over the earth. The seed sprouts and grows into branches interlaced with light. Out of and into the light grow these branches, nourished by the same source, nurtured by life-giving vertical and horizontal relationships. That’s how huge a tiny seed with a little light and water can become.

The image seems organic. It lives, moves, blows and bathes in the red-orange-yellow-golden light. It almost looks like a human lung with blood and air streaming through it, bringing life to the remotest places. I look up close and see birds and a nest in the branches. The mustard seed has matured and now gives room to other life. And somewhere in the middle of the branches, in the pillar of light, I think I perceive a face.

So much life has been captured in this concise image! Our confined reality is interlaced with light, wonderful unconquerable life. It cannot but impregnate the earth with hope of restoration and fullness of life. What a relief that I am not the only one who carries this hope deep within me! For thousands of years the earth has been longing for the fulfilment of the promise of restoration:

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light.
For those who lived in a land of deep shadows –
light! sunbursts of light!...
For a child has been born – for us!
the gift of a son – for us!...
His ruling authority will grow,
and there’ll be no limits to the wholeness he brings.
 (Isaiah 9, The Message)

Imre Szakács: Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31), 2009, mixed media on canvas; 150x130 cm. Private collection Budapest.

I read this right before my run this morning and the image stuck in my mind as I ran and prayed for you. I thought about the parable of the mustard seed and the image of the painting here with life radiating from it. I thought of your mile long walk yesterday through the hospital.   Even the description above alludes to the image of a lung.  There are signs everywhere that point to God's goodness and fingerprint in all of this, Jens and Abby.

And I marvel and want to kick my heels in the air with joy
that I get to be a witness to this glory before me.

Glory be to God for the gift of your new lungs, for being back in room 9D, for fact that you both can inhale and exhale for the first time in years together, for the hope of a homecoming soon, for the amazing progress and strength and courage that you all have shown lately...

And then tonight at our small group, I checked my phone and saw this and almost screamed with excitement. This painting that I saw this morning immediately came to mind again when I read this.  Radiant joy.
Glory. Glory. Glory.
Wishing I could come and cry and laugh and sing and dance with you in this moment.

I love you.

my friend Elizabeth's response to this post after I shared it with her:
"These two things are profoundly wonderful. I love that you and Jens are both sharing photos of your app that tallies your distance. What an amazing symbol across so much distance. I also LOVE that painting as well. I am drawn to it.  It evokes a lot of thoughts for me.  It is wonderful when art does that."
